Cardiovascular diseases are currently the leading cause of death in the Russian Federation. They also contribute to the disability of the working-age population, due to which the level of well-being is significantly reduced and the quality of life worsens.

   Everyone knows how harmful smoking is, but, unfortunately, the number of smokers in our country continues to increase, doctors and scientists do not get tired of warning about the dangers of nicotine and other components of tobacco smoke for health, but this has almost no practical benefit. Most smokers are sure that nothing will happen to them, and health problems await them only in old age, which is still a long way off. But, in fact, smoking and the cardiovascular system begin to interact after the first cigarette. According to scientific research conducted by WHO, smoking is the main risk factor for the development of myocardial infarctions and microinfarctions among people under 50 years of age.

   In the course of the studies, it was found that when smoking one cigarette, the smoker’s heart began to work at an accelerated rhythm, which lasted for 10-15 minutes. Half a smoked cigarette is enough to increase blood pressure by 5%, pulse rate by 14%, and load on muscle fibers by almost 20%! The heart of a smoker makes a daily 12 – 15 of thousands of contractions greater than the heart of man, who does not smoke. In addition to the mechanical effect on the heart and blood vessels, tobacco smoke interferes with the normal saturation of blood with oxygen, which leads to tissue ischemia, primarily the brain and heart muscle suffer from this. In recent years, the link between smoking and the sudden death of young healthy men and women who die instantly from thrombosis or heart attack has been actively discussed. Most smokers prefer not to think about the state of their cardiovascular system and not to worry about the risk of heart attacks and coronary heart disease, which they think only affect the elderly.

But even the youngest smoker, after several years of regular smoking, reveals such typical diseases as:

regular smoking

– hypertension – high blood pressure characteristic of all smokers, due to the nicotine which causes vasospasm, arterial pressure is first raised sporadically, and then – continuously. The role of smoking in the development of early arterial hypertension has already been proven, and among older smokers, regular smoking becomes the most common cause of hypertensive crises;

– ischemic heart disease – it is enough to smoke 5-10 cigarettes daily, and you are guaranteed coronary heart disease. Gradually, the areas of ischemia in the heart muscle become more and more, and the smoker’s heart begins to interrupt work, which will lead to – a heart attack or constant pain in the heart depends on the length of time and intensity of smoking;

– myocardial infarction – today smokers, starting from the age of 20, suffer from myocardial infarctions. Microinfarctions are most often not diagnosed, but the risk of dying from myocardial infarction increases by about 3 times;

– arrhythmias – smoking can cause not only heart attack and hypertension, but also atrial arrhythmia. Nicotine, acting on nerve receptors in the tissues of the heart, is able to disrupt the correct rhythm of the heart, forcing the atria to contract in an arbitrary rhythm. Moreover, arrhythmia most often develops in young smokers, turning their life into a real nightmare – any physical or nervous shock can be the last.

Prevention: it would be appropriate to state that the negative effect of smoking on the cardiovascular system can be reduced by eliminating intense stress from your life, maintaining an active lifestyle, accustoming your body to hardening procedures (pouring cold water, contrast shower), good sleep and rest … You also need to eat right, eliminating too fatty and cholesterol-rich foods from your diet. But most of all, the heart of the smoker will be pleased with the complete and unconditional refusal to smoke tobacco! Take care of your health!
